Zsofia Torma (1840 - 1899) - archaeologist, anthropologist and paleontologist

 Born in Cristur.
 Lived in Orastie until the end of her life, and was buried there.
 Diverse concerns: history, folklore, archeology, ethnography.
 Publications: "Ethnographic Analogies" (Iena, 1894);
 "Neolithic settlements in Hunedoara County" (1879);
 Turdas neolithic culture is known today because of her first discoveries.
 She organized a Neolithic Museum with pieces found at Turdas.
 She supported the idea of ​​continuity of the Romanians in this region.




Albert Amlacher (1847 - 1939) - writer

Writer and historic in love with the Carpathian lands.
Founding member of the "CarpathianAssociation";
Honorary Member of the historical and archaeological Association of Hunedoara county.

Ioan Mihu (1854 - 1927) - lawyer

Orastie scholar, and politician involved in the cultural and economic life of his time.
Studies: Orastie (Kun College), University of Graz, Vienna and Budapest.
Settles in Orastie as an attorney.
One of the founding members of the Bank of "Ardeal", and its first director.
Member of the Romanian Society for Theatre Fund and Astra Association of Orastie.
Representative novel: "Weekly Review of my political, cultural, and economic thoughts"




Ioan Branga (1863 - 1936)

Born in Poiana Sibiului.
Brilliant student of Gheorghe Dima.
Starting 1883, for over a quarter of a century, he leads the Orastie Choir (also known as "the Romanian Reunion Choir")
In 1906 - at the Roman Arenas in Bucharest, the Orastie Choir wins several gold medals in a choral festival.
Ioan Branga also held a few other positions:
Member of the “Ardeleana” Bank Supervisory Committee (director, later);
Member of the Parish Committee and the urban community
Retired in 1913.




MIRON CRISTEA (1868 - 1939) - patriarch, prime minister

Born in Toplita.
In 1890 became interim director and teacher of Romanian School of Orastie.
Secretary of the Consistory of Sibiu.
Bishop of Caransebes.
Taking part of the Great Union of Alba Iulia, as Bishop.
Becomes the first Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church after the reunification of the country.
After the abdication of King Carol II, he is part of the regency.




Preot Protopop Ioan Moţa (1868 - 1940) journalist, priest

Born in Nojag.
He served as priest in Orastie since the late 19th century until his death (1940).
He was among the intellectuals who started the newspaper "Libertatea".
The 1902 is director and owner of "Libertatea".
From 1915, he takes refuge in Bucharest, still publishing "Libertatea".
In 1916, he was sent to the U.S. to support cause the cause of the  Romanians union. Still doesn’t give up on printing the newspaper.
"Libertatea" continued to be published inCleveland.




Dr. Aurel Vlad (1875 - 1953)

Grandson, by his mother, of Gheorghe Baritiu.
Education: Kun College of Orastie and Law School in Budapest.
Lawyer in Deva and Orastie.
The second director of the “Ardeleana” Bank.
Director and owner of the newspaper "Solia Dreptăţii" of Orastie.
Elected deputy to the Parliament of Budapest.
He funded the Unification of December 1st 1918.
He died in 1953 in a communist prison from Sighet.
Honorary Citizen of Orastie (post - mortem).




Aurel Vlaicu (1882 - 1913) - engineer, inventor, airplane constructor and early pilot

Born in Binţinţi, near Orastie.
High schoolof Orastie and Sibiu.
1902 - enlists the Polytechnic School of Budapest.
Inventor, engineer at the Opel car factory in Rüsselsheim.
June 17, 1910 - Vlaicu managed to break ground with its first aircraft, "VLAICU I"
August 16, 1910 - successfully fly at a height of 100 meters.
December 1910 - begins the construction of "VLAICU II"
September 13, 1913 - collapses and dies near Băneşti village. He was trying to cross the Carpathians, to attend the Astra celebrationsin Orastie.




Andrei Farago (1886-1965) - farmacist

A widely used medicinal plants.

Sebastian Bornemisa (1890 - 1953) - journalist, writer, politician, philosopher

Born in Burjuc. Publicist, poet, folklorist.
Faculty of Letters and doctorate from the Universityof Budapest.
He lived and worked in Orastie, Cluj and Bucharest.
He started as a publicistfor"Foaia interesană", supplement of "Libertatea".
In 1911 he starts editing the magazine "Cosânzeana", in Orastic.
A substantially edited and printed works such as "Almanahul scriitorilor de la noi" (1911), the volume of short stories "Frământări" (by Liviu Rebreanu), "Poemele singurătăţii" (by Victor Eftimiu) etc.
As a politician: member of the National Party (1919 -1920) and the People's Party (1926 -1927).




Valeriu Bora (1890 - 1976) - teacher, writer, journalist

Theological Studies in Lugoj and Blaj.
Greek-Catholic priest in the villages Vaidei and Homorod.
Publishes poetry and different materials in various publications of the time: "Unrea", "Românul", "Drapelul", "Gazeta Hunedoarei" and Orastie magazines such as "Libertatea", "Solia dreptăţii".
On his initiative, begins the "Transylvanian Society of Romanian Writers" (Cluj-Napoca).
Novels and published works: "Truda", "Visează Pământul", "Drapele şi Lauri" etc.
He enjoyed the friendship ofrenowned writers:Nicolae lorga, Liviu Rebreanu, lon Agârbiceanu, Eugen Lovinescu, etc.




Aron Demian (1891-1970) - teacher, politician

Study: Orastie (primary), Blaj (high school), Cluj (Faculty of Letters).
December 1918 - professor at the "Andrei Saguna" High School of Brasov.
July 1919 - comes to Orastie. Becomes the rector of the Romanian boarding school.
1921 -1938 - Director of "Aurel Vlaicu" High School.
He founded "Mihai Eminescu"Romanian Language Society.
1938 -1945 - Inspector General in the Ministry of Education.
Since 1949 - professor at several schools in the Orastie area.
Since 1999 he is an Honorary Citizen (posthumously) of Orastie.
Aron Demian remains the most representative teacher in the history of "Aurel Vlaicu"High School.




Samoilă Ciumaşu (1893 - 1961) - politician

Education: Hungarian Reformed High School of Orastie;
High School and Theological Seminary in Blaj;
bachelor's degree in Greek Catholic theology in Lugoj.
1919-1947 - professor at the "Aurel Vlaicu" High School of Orastie.
A greatly contribution to the establishment andthe organizing of the "Digitalis"cooperative (cooperative  president for 16 years and technical director for 6 years).
Mayor of Orastie (nov.1945 - mar.1946)
Imprisoned by the communist regime for N.I.P Policy (1947-1948).
